Lourdes Ray and Kay Eckstein Cardiovascular Institute is 30,000 square feet dedicated to meeting all a patient’s needs in cardiovascular care in a consolidated space. The Institute provides an unprecedented model of care with cardiologists, vascular specialists, and cardiothoracic surgeons working together to provide the best results for patients.

From prevention and diagnosis to treatment and rehabilitation, the premier cardiovascular team at Lourdes provides care that saves lives.

Lourdes recently earned a five-star rating for the treatment of heart failure in the HealthGrades’ 2009 analysis. That means less people lost their lives to heart failure at Lourdes than at any other hospital in the region.

Heart attacks rarely occur without warning. Quite often the symptoms of a heart attack appear weeks or even months before the actual occurrence. Early treatment may not only mean the difference between life and death, but also between a functional life compared to a disabled life.

At Lourdes, your complete heart care is our priority – from prevention, diagnosis, and treatment through the cardiac rehabilitation process.

Emergency Center at Lourdes
The Emergency Center at Lourdes is the first center of its kind in western Kentucky. We provide priority treatment to heart patients 24 hours a day within the Emergency Center. Our staff of nurses and physicians is specially trained in the care of cardiac emergencies. Immediately upon arrival, a nurse and physician examine chest pain patients, while an EKG, lab work, and chest X-rays are performed.

What Is Vascular Disease?
Vascular conditions can be caused by blockages that restrict blood flow to vital organs and tissues or by progressive weakening and enlargement of major arteries, which results in the formation of aneurysms.

Diseases of the blood vessels are usually classified as coronary or peripheral. Coronary disease pertains to the blood vessels that supply the heart. Peripheral or non-cardiac vascular diseases are disorders of blood vessels that carry blood to and away from all other tissues of the body.

Illnesses and disability caused by peripheral vascular diseases include:

  • Stroke
  • Aneurysms
  • Hypertension/Kidney failure
  • Walking impairment
  • Limb loss

Peripheral vascular experts provide specialized care for venous problems as well, including:

  • Deep venous thrombosis
  • Thrombophlebitis
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Chronic venous insufficiency
  • Varicose veins

The spectrum of vascular disease is broad and complex, representing serious, sometimes fatal and often debilitating health concerns.
