Lourdes in Thomson Reuters Top 10 Health System in the U.S. Award to CHP for Second Year in a Row

(Paducah, KY, June 25, 2010) - For the second year in a row, a national study by Thomson Reuters has ranked Lourdes’ parent company, Catholic Health Partners (CHP), among the top 10 health systems in the United States.

Lourdes is the only hospital in Kentucky honored with the award. This national recognition highlights the 10 health systems across the nation that reached benchmarks for excellence in measures of clinical performance.

Steven Grinnell, President & CEO of Lourdes, added “this distinction demonstrates that quality health care is the number one priority at Lourdes. Joseph Pittard, M.D., Lourdes Chief of Staff, concurs saying, “This study analyzes all the right metrics for quality and gives our patients and their families’ confidence in the care they receive at Lourdes.”

Researchers from Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals program analyzed the clinical quality and efficiency of 255 health systems nationwide to identify the top 10.

They studied mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, adherence to clinical standards of care, 30-day mortality rate, 30-day readmission rate and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers (HCAHPS) patient satisfaction scores.

Jean Chenoweth of Thomson Reuters added that the top 10 “health systems outperformed their peers by a wide margin. They provided better care, saved more lives, had fewer medical complications, and made fewer patient errors – even though they treat sicker patients, on average. They set the standard for the industry.”
